Our new album „Reiselust“

German-based modern trio, the Eldering Ensemble have released their debut album, „Reiselust“, with works by Beethoven, Spohr and Mendelssohn.

Featuring Melbourne-born violinist Simon Monger, alongside Jeanette Gier (cello) and Sandra Urba (piano), this recording greets the listener with a slender and lively sound.

This debut album for the ensemble features a world premiere recording of the new Urtext edition of Louis Spohr’s Reisesonate (Travel Sonata), insightfully played by the young, highly acclaimed musicians with verve.

The opening movement subtitled ‘Reiselust’ – ‘Travel desire’, reveals the programmatic nature of this unique and vivid composition – written on route to Dresden for performance by himself and his wife, a distinguished pianist. Equally virtuosic and demanding for violin and piano, Spohr’s Travel Sonata is brimming with impressions of their journey – thundering hooves of coach horses, triumphant post horn calls, chanting peasants, a castrato aria and echoes of bohemian folk music.  The combination of Spohr’s Reisesonate with two well-known piano trios: Beethoven’s Ghost Trio and Mendelssohn’s dark c-minor trio is a remarkable pairing.   In 1811, Louis Spohr attended a rehearsal of the trio in Beethoven’s house with Beethoven himself at the piano. Mendelssohn, a good friend of Louis Spohr’s, dedicated his second Piano Trio to Spohr. Mendelssohn completed his demanding, dramatic trio whilst on holiday near Frankfurt and so the choice of program for the recording, under the motto ‘Travel Desire’ was clear.
